The Rabale MIDC police have arrested a man who was responsible for the maintenance of a building in Digha, following the death of a 14-year-old boy after falling into a duct meant for a lift on Friday.

The accused, Jagdish Khandekar, was arrested on Saturday evening.

No warning

Chetan Parshuram Kharade (14), a resident of Omkareshwar Plaza, was playing with his friends on the third floor on Friday when he slipped and fell into the duct. “When we visited the place, we found negligence on part of the maintenance man. No barricades had been put up, nor was there any notice warning people of the danger. The family approached us after the last rites of the boy and registered a case of negligence, following which we arrested him,” Senior police inspector Mamta Dsouza from Rabale MIDC police station said.

Kharade lived with his parents and younger brother and was to start Class IX from June at Saraswati School in Airoli.

Demolition notice

The police said Omkareshwar Plaza is one of the 90 unauthorised buildings due for demolition and has been served a notice by the MIDC. Mr. Khandekar had not installed the lift because of the notice.
