A spirited Bangladesh defeated India in a last-ball thriller to lift the Women’s Asia Cup at the Kinrara Oval, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. After reducing India to a paltry 112/9 in 20 overs, Bangladesh achieved the required target with three wickets to spare.
It was a collective effort by the Bangladeshi team as almost all the bowlers contributed to team’s success. In the batting department Nigar Sulatana and Rumana Ahmed chipped-in with 27 and 23 runs respectively.
On the other hand, it was a lone show by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for India, as she smashed 56 runs from 42 balls. In the bowling department, Poonam Yadav tried her best to restrict the opposition and returned with match figures of 4/9, but her effort went in vain.
Despite the loss, Harmanpreet acknowledged the effort put in her bowlers. After the match she said, “There was hold on the wicket, and there were very few areas for the medium pacers. But the spinners did a good job for us. It was not a decent total, but we fought till the end so the credit goes to the bowlers.”
She was also critical of the batters who could not get going and failed to string big partnerships. “It was a pressure game, and we had to control our nerves. We had to bat the situation and play to our skills. The batters didn’t handle nerves too well. There was nothing much in the wicket. Credit goes to Bangladesh for their performance in all departments. They were excellent,” she added.
Salma Khatun, Bangladesh skipper said that the win against India in the league stages, to churn out a performance like this. “We are very happy that we have won the Asia Cup. I can’t explain in words. We had confidence after the first India match, and we had to come through today because it was the final and we are happy we came through.”
“They had a lot to lose and we didn’t. We feel good that we had a lot of supporters here, and thanks to all the supporters here who have supported us. We started poorly in the tournament and we are happy to have made a comeback and won all matches,” she concluded.
