Pedestrian fighting for life after being struck by car on footpath in Melbourne's north

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a car veered onto a footpath and struck him in Melbourne's north.

A Ford Territory driving along Sydney road, near the Metropolitan Ring Road in Fawkner,  left the road and crashed into the pedestrian on the footpath just before 1am.

The four-wheel-drive then smashes into a nearby power box and, in the commotion, a second car also hit the power box.

Both the drivers involved stopped at the scene.

Police believe the incident was an accident.

The man who was struck has yet to be identified, but paramedics who treated him believe he was aged in his 30s.

The pedestrian was treated for injuries to his upper arm, pelvis and leg, and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Melbourne said he remains in critical condition.

The two drivers did not need treatment.

The driver of the Ford Territory, a 27- year old man from Coburg, is being interviewed by police and charges could be laid.
