CHANDIGARH: The municipal corporation will start sending notices from June-end to owners of about 60,000 properties who are yet to pay the tax.

With the last date to deposit tax under self-declaration scheme ending on May 1, the civic body has prepared a list of 50,000 residential properties and 10,000 commercial ones that are yet to pay up. “We have set a target of Rs 50 crore for this fiscal, as property tax is a key source of revenue for MC. In the last fiscal, the MC had collected Rs 42 crore through the tax,” said an MC official.

Under the two-month self-declaration scheme, the MC tax branch gave a rebate of 20% to residential properties and 10% to the commercial ones, and received about Rs 25 crore. “Now, residents will have to pay principal amount with penalty and interest on it. Unlike last year, when notices were sent to even those who had paid the tax, the MC will be extra careful while preparing the list,” he added.
