HYDERABAD: Kachiguda police on Friday arrested the owner of a famous pan shop here and his three friends for allegedly sexually assaulting a women software professional after promising to marry her. The arrested person has been identified as Upendra Varma,  who runs Mayur pan shop, which has over 20 branches across the twin cities. According to police the woman became friends with the Upendra Varma on Facebook in 2013. The woman in her complaint alleged they they used to chat and and he promised to marry her. Varma had concealed the truth that he was married and sexually assaulted her by giving a sweet pan laced with sedative, she said in her complaint. 

When the woman came to know that Varma was already married, he convinced her saying that he would divorce his wife and marry her. ‘’When she asked about their marriage, he starting avoiding her and threatened to upload their pictures and videos on social media,” police said.   

Based on her complaint, police registered cases under Section 376 ( Punishment for rape), 354 (C) (Voyeurism) and 417 (Punishment for cheating) of IPC against Varma and another case against his friends under Sections 506  of IPC. The other accused in the case are identified as Ajit Kumar, Manish and Mohammed Shazab. While Varma was sent to judicial remand, the other three were released on bail.
