Man dies after falling from cliffs near whale-watching platform at Kurnell

A man has died after falling from cliffs near a whale-watching platform at Kurnell in Sydney's south on Saturday afternoon, police say.

Police have been told the man may have been taking photographs of whales shortly before the accident occurred at 1.20pm.

Emergency services were called to the Cape Solander cliffs following reports that a man had fallen into the water.

A spokesman for the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter confirmed they found a "male person face down and unconscious" in water "directly below the whale watching platform" during a search of the area.

They sent down a rescue officer and winched the man to the helicopter shortly after 3pm.

NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR on the man in the helicopter and in a cliff-top car park, according to Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.

But the man, believed to be in his 30s, could not be revived, police said.

Police believe he may have been taking photographs at the whale-watching platform before the fall.

The death is not being treated as suspicious, with police believing it was "misadventure".

A spokesman from Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter said the man was found with "significant injuries", possibly indicating "a fall from height".

The man has not yet been identified. Police are on the scene and have launched an investigation.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Cape Solander, in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, is one of Sydney's best whale-watching spots, according to the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and June and July are the best times to see humpback whales as they migrate to warmer waters.

Whales have been known to swim as close as 200 metres from the coast at the location, the NPWS says.
