Monsoon arrives two days early in Odisha

Sources in India Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, informed that conditions were favourable for further advancement of South-west monsoon into more parts of the State in the next 24 hours.

BHUBANESWAR: The much-awaited south-west monsoon arrived in Odisha on Friday, two days ahead of scheduled date. Under its influence some places in South Odisha, including Malkangiri district, experienced good rainfall bringing relief from intense heat.

Sources in India Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, informed that conditions were favourable for further advancement of South-west monsoon into more parts of the State in the next 24 hours.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) will pass through Malkangiri and other parts of the country including, Kalingapatnam, Ratnagiri, Solapur, Nanded in Maharashtra among others.

On the other hand, the cyclonic circulation formed over north Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a low pressure area in the next 24 hours before moving towards the Bangladesh coast. Under its influence, northern part of the State is likely to experience heavy rainfall between June 9 and 11 while squally winds with a speed of 40 to 60 km/hr over north Bay of Bengal are also likely.

“Sea condition is predicted to be rough to very rough during this period over the north Bay of Bengal, and along and off the Odisha coast during this period. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea,” Director of Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, HR Biswas said.
