Farmer unions demand adequate power supply

LUDHIANA: Two Bhartiya Kissan Union (BKU) groups have threatened agitation if they don’t get adequate electricity supply in the coming days. BKU Lakhowal and Kadian group have expressed anger over inadequate power supply to farmers.

After holding a meeting of members here on Friday, BKU (Kadian) president Harmeet Singh Kadian said farmers in the state are neither getting adequate power supply nor adequate rate for their produce.

Kadian said farmers are bearing losses as they are not getting proper rates of vegetables in Mandis.

Meanwhile, BKU Lakhowal also held a meeting at Jagraon on Thursday. Giving details, general secretary of BKU Lakhowal, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, said the farmers are getting power supply to run their tubewells only for three to four hours. He added that they had submitted a memorandum to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited on May 23 about the issue but to no avail.

BKU Lakhowal leader said they are gathering around 3,000 farmers and will gherao the PSPCL office in Patiala on June 11. He added that they will press for availability power supply to farmers for ten hours at least.
