Mohali’s Deepak Anand elected to Ontario parliament

Mohali-born Deepak Anand, an alumnus of Panjab University’s chemical engineering department, has been elected to Ontario’s provincial parliament in Canada. The position is equivalent to that of a legislative assembly member in India.

A Progressive Conservative candidate, Anand, who had moved to Canada after graduating from PU in 2000, won the polls from Mississauga-Malton electoral seat. A resident of Mississauga for the past 18 years, he started his career with a local firm before setting up his own business and working for the Indian, especially Punjabi community, there.

Anand did his schooling from Gian Jyoti Public School in Mohali and his family resides in Phase 3A. His parents, Sardar Lal Anand and Santosh Anand, said Deepak’s win a matter of great pride for Punjab.

“Deepak was always involved in social service, which ultimately paved his way to the provincial parliament,” said his father.

“Deepak struggled a lot. He shaped his career on his own and then struggled to get the party ticket,” said his brother, Shalinder Anand, a former president of the Mohali property consultants’ association.

Shalinder’s son Sahibi Anand, who is a Mohali councillor, said his uncle’s electoral win has given him a greater responsibility to serve the people.
