Coleman softball wins 4th-straight regional

The Coleman High School softball program won its fourth-straight regional title Saturday as it swept Morrice by a scored of 15-0 in the opener before besting Merrill 11-1 in five innings.

Merrill beat Coleman in both teams’ conference openers but the Comets had their way at home Saturday.

“This was the game we wanted and the girls did a good job, especially with two outs,” said Coleman coach Chad Klopf. “We had a lot of two out hits and scoring and now we’re moving on.”

The Comets play in Division 4 quarterfinal at Rockford High School on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Faith Barden got the win in the nightcap, as she allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out 12.

Abigail Tubbs had a three-run homer while Autumn Tubbs went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Mackenzie Miller also had two hits while Makailyn Monson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the opener the Comets crushed Morrice 15-0 in five innings to advance.

Barden got the win in the circle as she didn’t allow a run on two hits in five innings while striking out seven.

The Comets posted a 10-spot in the first inning and never looked back.

Annabelle Bovee belted a three-run home and scored twice to pace the offense.

Barden added in three hits, including two doubles, and drove in six while Monson went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI.

Miller also had three hits, three runs and drove in two while Jaden Berthume had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

The Comets will play in a Division 4 quarterfinal on Tuesday at Rockford High at 5 p.m.

DIVISION 2

Escanaba 12, Chippewa Hills 0

GAYLORD – The Chippewa Hills softball team lost in a Division 2 regional finale Saturday, falling to Escanaba 12-0 in the title game.

The Warriors mustered only one hit in the loss while Escanaba had 17.

Chippewa Hills advanced to the final by opening the day with a 3-0 shutout win over Kalkaska.

In the opener the Warriors (15-17) got a complete-game victory from Teagan Dangler as she allowed no runs on six hits while striking out two.

Morgan Perkins suppled the big glow in the bottom of the first as she drove in three runs. She had two hits, one walk and three RBIs in the win.

DIVISION 3

Millington 11, St. Louis 1, 5 innings

MILLINGTON – The St. Louis softball team closed the season Saturday in Division 3 regional action at Millington.

The Sharks fell 11-1 in regional semifinal play to the hosts and close the 2018 season out with a record of 14-19. Millington is the top-ranked team in the state in Division 3.

Millington took a 7-0 lead in the first and never looked back in the contest.

Aynslee Koutz, Brooklyn Filipiak, Alexis Beeson, Shelby Dosson and Kaylee Rodriguez all had hits for the Sharks in the finale.

Sanford-Meridian 6, Farwell 3

STANDISH – The Farwell softball program closed the 2018 season out Saturday in Division 3 regional action from Standish-Sterling High School.

The Eagles fell to Sanford-Meridian 6-3 in the regional finale.

The Mustangs took an early 5-0 lead and then held on for the win.

The Eagles opened the day with a 13-0, five-inning, victory over McBain.

Farwell posted five runs in the bottom of the first to claim a 5-0 lead and then added a three-spot in the second before plating five mores runs in the bottom of the third.

Saupe led the way as she picked up the win, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out 11. She also had two hits and drove in five while Sydney Seybert and Harley Crawford both added in two hits.

Soyer Barnett earned two walks while Mia Fetzer drove in two.
