Heavy rain accompanied by squally winds hit the district on Saturday afternoon, uprooting trees in several places.
One person lost her life and another sustained minor injuries, when trees fell on top of their houses.
Power supply was cut off in many places as trees fell on top of power lines and electric posts were uprooted.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel were kept on their toes through the day as they scampered from one place to another to remove the uprooted trees. At Perunkadavila in the Marayamuttom police station limits, a 42-year-old woman died when a coconut tree fell on top of her house in the afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Deepa. She was brought dead to the Neyyattinkara General Hospital.
At Kadakkavoor, an eight-year-old girl sustained minor injuries after a tree fell on top of her house. At the General Hospital in the city, trees fell on top of the buildings housing wards 9 and 11. No one was injured.
Coastal areas
Houses along the coastal areas sustained damage in the gusty winds that hit these regions in the afternoon. At Puthukurichy, roofing sheets of ten houses were blown away in the winds while two houses at Perumathura and one at Anchuthengu were similarly affected.
Rural areas
According to information from the Fire and Rescue Services Department, reports of tree uprooting in the winds began coming initially from the rural areas, around 3 p.m. Trees fell at Mangalapuram, Pallipuram, Parassala, Neyyattinkara, and other places. At Poovanpara in Attingal, traffic was held up for sometime when a tree fell across the road.
At Chirayinkeezhu, a temple was partially damaged when a banyan tree fell on it.
Cars damaged
Trees fell on cars and motorcycles at Kazhakuttam, near the Government Medical College mortuary, near SUT Hospital, Pattom, and Vattiyurkavu.
A hoarding fell on the road near Pattom. Trees also fell near Raj Bhavan, near the Government Polytechnic at Vattiyurkavu, Sreekandeswaram, Peroorkada, Vazhayila, Pappanamcode, and Vattappara.
