GHAZIABAD: The city’s civic body has said it will ensure drains are cleaned and desilted by June 15, before the onset of monsoon.
CP Singh, the commissioner of Ghaziabad municipal corporation, said the department had issued a helpline number — 8178018388 — for residents to lodge their complaints regarding sewer and clogged drains. The official said the civic body managed as many as 456 drains, of which 66 were big.

“The civic body has assigned the task of cleaning the 66 major drains to a private agency. Both excavators and labourers have been deployed to clean the drains. We plan to spend around Rs 50-60 lakh on the project. Every day, over 20 big and small drains are being cleaned and zonal officers have been asked to ensure that waste is removed the very next day. They have also been asked to click pictures of the drains before and after they are cleaned,” Singh said.

The municipal corporation has identified 17 spots in the city where sludge is found to have been accumulated in huge proportions. After these places are cleaned, sanitation workers have been directed to maintain a continuous check so that drains do not choke during the monsoon. Some of these spots are Navayug market, Ramte Ram road, Maliwara Chowk, GT Road, Kalka Gadhi Chowk, and areas near the GDA office and Rakesh Marg.

A similar initiative is being carried out by the Ghaziabad Development Authority in Indirapuram. Hiralal Singh, the GDA executive engineer in Indirapuram, said: “Two private contractors have been given the responsibility to clean drains in Indirapuram. There are around 10 big drains in the area, but many small ones. We have planned to complete the work over the next days.”
