Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte won the hearts of millions on Twitter when he cleaned up the coffee he spilled at the Dutch Parliament house.
The incident, believed to have happened on June 4, was filmed by a Dutch diplomat. In the video, Mr. Rutte is seen accidentally spilling his coffee while walking down a corridor. Then he picks up the cup, grabs a mop from a sweeper and cleans up the mess without missing any spots, amidst loud cheers from the cleaners.
A later clip showed the Prime Minister learning to adjust the height of the mop from a cleaner.
The video went viral immediately on Twitter, with foreign users admiring Mr. Rutte's humility and his sense of responsibility. Many Indians too praised Mr. Rutte, with some of them questioning the way their leaders would act if they are put in a similar situation.
However, many Dutch people shrugged it off, probably because they have gotten used to their PM’s simple style. Some even felt the incident was given unnecessary attention.
This isn’t the first time Mr. Rutte is showing his simplicity. In 2012, he won applause from Iranian and Kenyan delegation members who were surprised to see a Prime Minister cycling to and from work, without any escorts or chase cars. Last year, Mr. Rutte was photographed cycling to King Willem-Alexander’s palace for a meeting.
He didn't just stop there. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Netherlands last year, Mr. Rutte had gifted him a bicycle too.
