Fake Rs 2000 currency circulation in Karnataka; consignments received from Bangladesh; NIA chargesheet reveals

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a chargesheet in connection to the fake currency circulation in many parts of Karnataka before the special court here in Bengaluru. The NIA probe revealed that inter-state and international gangs were involved in circulating fake currencies in the state.
Chikkodi resident Ashok Kumar (45), West Bengal native Dalim Mia (21), Rajendra Bapu Patil (28) of Belagavi are already arrested in the case. NIA says that the probe has revealed that inter-state and international linkages pointing towards the supply of fake currencies received from Bangladesh.

The entire episode broke after Belagavi police intelligence based on a tip-off arrested Ashok who had managed to circulate fake notes of Rs 2,000 denomination totalling Rs 3.5 lakh. Born in Chikkodi, he was living with his family there. He was in huge debt and was trying to make some quick bucks by fake currency to repay his loans, a police source said. By then NIA based on a tip-off arrested Dalim Mia in Karnataka-Maharashtra border.

The police were able to seize 41 fake currency notes, all in the denomination of Rs 2 thousand from the residence of Ashok. Suspecting larger conspiracy, the case was handed over to NIA, Mumbai. The probe has revealed that Dalim Mia procured Fake Indian Currency notes of face value of Rs. 6.80 lacs and Rs. 3.50 lacs (in the denomination of Rs. 2000) with the help of absconding accused and delivered it to arrested accused Ashok Kumar in two consignments.

NIA sources said that these accused were receiving fake currency and were getting commissions to circulate it. They primarily used to circulate it sugar factory labourers or daily wage labourers in the name of 'salary' or through other means. Dalim was in NIA radar for a long time as he was known for circulating fake currencies. We got information that he was in Nippani in Belagavi district and Ashok Kumar provided him accommodation, an NIA source said.
