A 31-year-old former student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-D) allegedly jumped from the seventh floor of a building on campus on Friday morning, the police said.
No suicide note was recovered from Anshum Gupta’s possession, the police said.
However, his family said that he was undergoing treatment for depression for the past five years.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere said Anshum, a resident of south Delhi, had graduated from IIT-D in 2010 after completion of his five-year dual BTech-MTech degree.
Refusing to divulge details, a relative said, “We do not wish to blame the institute. He was unwell. We do not know why he took this step and why [at] IIT. He was a bright personality.”
A police officer probing the case said Anshum told his mother that he was leaving for IIT around 10 a.m.
“When she asked why he was going to college, he told her he was going to meet someone. She asked for a name but he told her she did not know the person and left,” the officer said.
Next, the police received a call regarding Anshum’s suicide at 10.55 a.m.
The police said he jumped from the Industrial Research and Development Unit building. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was declared dead.
Had quit a few jobs
Quoting Anshum’s family, the officer said the deceased was unhappy professionally and had quit a few jobs. He was currently unemployed.
“The family said he worked with a technology giant in the United States from 2012-15. He returned to India after he quit that job. He worked in Noida for a while and quit a few months ago,” he said.
The police are now enquiring why Anshum went to IIT and whether he met someone on campus.
“His body has been sent for post-mortem and inquest proceedings have been initiated,” Mr. Dumbere said.
Anshum is survived by his mother and younger brother. His brother was in the US at the time of the incident.
