Julian Edelman is sorry.

On Thursday, the news broke that the Patriots receiver is facing a four-game suspension after failing a performance enhancing drug test by the NFL. On Friday, Edelman issued a statement on his Instagram account apologizing for the incident, but stating he didn’t know how his test turned up positive.

“I am very sorry – I don’t know what happened,” Edelman wrote. “I’ve taken many, many tests obviously over the course of my career, and nothing like this has ever happened. I apologize to the Kraft family, my coaches, teammates and fans. As this matter is being appealed, I can’t say anymore but not matter what, I will be ready to play and pursue another championship with our team and for Patriots fans around the world.”

In the NFL, they never reveal what players test positive for so it’s unlikely we’ll ever find out. According to NFL rules, a player will be suspended for four games if he has a positive test for a stimulant or anabolic agent.

Edelman is currently appealing the suspension. He can still practice with the Patriots as the team wraps up OTAs next week on June 11, June 12, June 14 and June 15.
