THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan triggered a row in the assembly on Thursday by alleging that opposition members were encouraging extremist forces. "There could be a few individuals in mainstream political parties supporting extremists but the attitude of such persons shouldn't be reflected in the assembly," he said in reply to an adjournment motion moved by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath against the alleged police brutality in Edathala.

He said Usman, the youth manhandled by police, had the backing of extremist forces involved in Kalamassery bus burning case and the government could not let them assault policemen. He also said action had been taken against policemen involved.
