Range Rover Evoque Coupe Dropped Due To Slow Sales

The Range Rover Evoque is one of the few crossovers offered in three body styles but it appears the company has quietly decided to drop the three-door variant.

In a statement to Autocar, a Land Rover spokesperson confirmed the news by saying “From the 2019 model year, Land Rover has rationalized its Range Rover Evoque body style offering to concentrate on the five-door model and convertible, which account for the majority of sales.”

There’s no word on how many Evoque coupes the company has managed to sell but the publication says sales dropped off after the convertible variant was introduced. Sourced also indicated sales of the five-door variant account for as much as 95% of overall Evoque sales.

If that figure is correct, it’s not surprisingly that Land Rover decided to drop the Evoque coupe. MINI made a similar decision a few years ago when it dropped the Paceman to focus on the Countryman. In the United States in 2014, MINI sold 2,082 Paceman crossovers compared to 22,645 Countryman models according to Carsalesbase. This means the model accounted for slightly less than 10% of overall sales in the United States that year.

Despite the decision to drop the coupe, the Evoque convertible will live on. It remains unclear how many convertibles Range Rover is selling but it’s apparently enough to justify keeping the model around.

The timing likely isn’t an accident either as Range Rover is working on an all-new Evoque. The model is expected to be launched in mid-2019 with a familiar design that incorporates a number of styling cues from the Velar.

Reports have suggested the crossover will ride on an updated version of the D8 platform and be offered with an assortment of four-cylinder engines. There have also been rumors suggesting the company could introduce hybrid models with petrol and diesel engines.
