Uncertainty confronts India’s participation in football at the Asian Games in Jakarta in August.
Even as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is cock-a-hoop at the national team’s performances in the last two years, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is not convinced.
“We have asked the AIFF to justify the demand that India should send its football team. We have not had any pleasant experience from the last few Asian Games,” said a senior IOA official.
“Can they guarantee a decent finish at the Asian Games? A place in the top eight would be encouraging, but as of now there is no reason why we should back the AIFF’s demand.”
Sentimental connect
India boasts of two gold medals at the Asian Games — in the inaugural edition in 1951 and 1962. “There is a sentimental connect,” explained an AIFF official. The team has done exceptionally well to qualify for the Asian Cup to be held early next year.
Former national coach Sukhwinder Singh supported India’s participation.
“There’s no doubt we have to improve overall, but how can you assess yourself without playing against top teams. It is important to keep up the motivational levels of the players by sending them to big competitions.”
Sukhwinder argued, “We will know where we stand only after we go to the Asian Games.
“It can be part of the youth development programme and also a preparation for the Asian Cup. No team can guarantee success. Italy is not playing this World Cup. Does it mean Italy is not a good team? “
A final decision on India’s football participation at Jakarta now depends on AIFF convincing the IOA of its improved structure.
But AIFF is hopeful of getting the clearance.
