HYDERABAD: A week after hitting the Kerala coast, the southwest
monsoon is all set to enter
Telangana on Friday, the
India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, said in a weather update on Thursday.
IMD authorities said the presence of an upper air cyclonic over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal, has made conditions favourable for the monsoon to advance into Telangana.
"The southwest monsoon will first hit the southern districts and gradually extend to other districts in north Telangana. The intensity is very active over coastal Andhra Pradesh as all districts will receive heavy rainfall for the next three days," said Raja Rao, meteorologist at IMD, Hyderabad.
The weathermen also issued a heavy rainfall warning, accompanied with thunderstorm and gusty winds, for Friday.
Pre-monsoon showers bring down maximum temperature by 4 degrees
Pre-monsoon showers lashed the city on Wednesday evening, leading to water-logging and inundation in areas such as Kapra, Malkajgiri and East Anandbagh. The heavy showers that began around 2am continued till early Thursday.
According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) figures, maximum rainfall of 10.82 cm was recorded at Bandlaguda followed by 8.98 cm in Kapra and 7 cm in Malkajgiri. Several other areas such as Alwal, Moula Ali, Monda Market, Asmangadh, received two to five cm rainfall.
Officials attributed sudden downpour to thunderstorm activity. “Heavy downpour was mainly due to thunderstorm activity. When monsoon is advancing, premonsoon showers is common phenomenon,” said Raja Rao.
The downpour brought down maximum temperature by four degree Celsius to 33.4 degree Celsius from 37.9 degree Celsius on Thursday.
Low-lying colony in East Anandbagh was among the worst-affected areas, which was inundated with overflowing sewage leaving several residents fuming at GHMC.
“Water entered several houses and many cars and two-wheelers were seen floating in the area. People were only able to move out of their houses after 12 noon. Although GHMC officials visit the area every year, no concrete solutions have emerged so far,” said JLN Murthy, resident of Shirdi Nagar.
The recently inaugurated Chintalkunta underpass too came under a sheet of water making it tough for commuters to pass through it.
