PUNE: The monsoon missed its official date with Pune on Thursday, June 7.
Though the monsoon’s arrival in Pune and Mumbai is imminent, the officials at the
India Meteorological Department (IMD) were unable to furnish the likely dates. They, however, said on Thursday that the monsoon may enter parts of south Maharashtra over the next 24 hours and may cover the entire state between June 9 and June 11. The officials also assured that a delay of up to seven days in the monsoon’s arrival — in Pune or Mumbai — is “normal.”
M Mohapatra, the director general (meteorology), IMD, said the monsoon had reached Goa on Thursday and is likely to enter south Maharashtra on Friday.
“Rainfall activity is likely to increase over coastal Karnataka, Goa and south Maharashtra, with a possibility of monsoon’s onset in south Maharashtra on June 8. Widespread rainfall activity is likely to continue until June 10. The intensity is likely to increase before the advance of monsoon in these regions,” he said. IMD officials said enhanced rainfall activity is very likely to extend to north coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, from June 8. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in these regions is also very likely.
For June 8, IMD has forecasted that two districts — Pune and Ahmednagar — in north Madhya Maharashtra and all districts in south Madhya Maharashtra — Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and
Solapur — may receive moderate to heavy rain. Moderate rain refers to showers ranging from 15.6mm to 64.4mm, while heavy rains are showers between 64.5 mm to 115.5mm.
