THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State government has issued a notification on Thursday allowing passengers to travel standing on superfast and express services of the KSRTC. The notification was issued after the high court had passed an order banning seatless travel in such buses.
The notification issued by the deputy secretary to the government, states that it is necessary in
public interest to exempt the
classes of service from the provisions of the
Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules.
The high court, in its verdict on March 27, had ordered that the KSRTC shall be bound to comply with the provisions of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, whereby the organization was prohibited to have standing passengers in luxury services, super deluxe services, super express services and super fast services.
The order was issued on a petition filed by the Centre for Consumer Education at Pala. In the petition, it was alleged that KSRTC was violating provisions of the motor vehicle rules.
The court had also clarified that the government has the right to make appropriate modification to the rules, if it deems it necessary.
