GURUGRAM: A five-foot-long black cobra was rescued by wildlife activists on Friday afternoon from the Sultanpur area in the city.
The cobra was rescued from a 60-foot deep well and the rescuers got a few injuries while going down the well. “We got a call from a resident, saying he had spotted a black cobra in a well. It was a difficult rescue operation as we had to go down a 60-feet-deep well to rescue the cobra. While I got a few injuries, the snake was rescued successfully,” said Anil Gandas, a wildlife enthusiast in the city.

He said the cobra was a male and about eight years old. After the initial examination, the cobra was found to be healthy and was rehabilitated in its habitat. “We rehabilitated the serpent in its original habitat in the Aravalis,” said Gandas.

According to officials, the cobra becomes active in the summer season. “We are getting reports of snake sightings every second day. Also, nearly five cobras have been rescued in the past one month. Actually, snakes get active during summers,” said an official of the wildlife department.

This is the second black cobra rescued in the past two months. The last rescue operation took place in Kaliawas village. “It is very rare to see a black-coloured cobra in this region. We generally spot spectacled cobras in the area. However, this summer, we are witnessing a few black cobras, may be due to a rise in the heat levels,” said Gandas.
