Avengers Infinity War is the highest grossing film in India for 2018.

Bollywood box office has thrown quite a few surprises this year. While films like Padmaavat, PadMan and Baaghi 2 came true to the trade’s expectations, it were the surprises that 2018 offered -- female-centric Raazi and Veere Di Wedding and a small film such as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety -- that truly brought cheer to the film industry.

Deepika Padukone’s Padmaavat remains the top grosser, highest weekend grosser and highest first week grosser of the year. Alia Bhatt’s Raazi recently managed to dethrone the surprise hit, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, becoming the fifth highest grosser and fifth film to cross Rs 100 crore mark this year.

And now, Veere Di Wedding, headlined by an all-female cast, touted to be a film about female friendship, reached the top five list for the first week collection, earning Rs 56.96 crore within a week of its release. Veere Di Wedding is also the fifth highest opening weekend grosser of the year.

The other films in the top five list are Akshay Kumar’s PadMan (at no. 4 spot, with Rs 62.87 crore earning), Ajay Devgn’s Raid (third, Rs 63.05 cr) and Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 (second highest earner, with Rs 112.85 cr).

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Padmaavat has topped the week one collection for 2018 while Veere Di Wedding made it to the fifth slot.

We also saw three major Hollywood releases affecting the Indian box office like never before - Black Panther, Deadpool 2 and Avengers Infinity War.

Avengers Infinity War topped most box office lists, including the record made by Padmaavat, with Rs 120 crore opening weekend collection in India. Avengers: Infinity War became the highest grossing Hollywood film in India with Rs 246 crore in less than two weeks while Black Panther earned a little over Rs 67 crore.

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2, on the other hand, would be sixth in the opening weekend collection list, after earning Rs 33 crore within four days at Indian ticket windows. Deadpool 2 also features Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Karan Soni, Zazie Beetz, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapicic and Leslie Uggams.

With Salman Khan-starrer Race 3 and Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanjay Dutt biopic Sanju lined up for release later this month, the status quo is likely to change.
