THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan triggered a ruckus in the Assembly on Thursday by alleging that Opposition members were encouraging extremist forces.

"There could be a few individuals in mainstream political parties who might be supporting extremists. But, the attitude of such persons shouldn't be reflected in the Assembly," he said. Vijayan was replying to an adjournment motion moved by Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath against the alleged police brutality in Edathala case.

Asserting that Usman (the youth manhandled by the police) had the backing of extremist forces involved in the Kalamassery bus burning case, Vijayan said the government couldn't let such extremists assault policemen.

"The government has taken action against the guilty policemen, who failed to restrain themselves when Usman began a fight at the spot. But, the Opposition has taken a stand to help extremists by raising their voice for them in the Assembly," he said, prompting protesting opposition members to move to the well of the house and raise slogans.
