Swara Bhasker on masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding: It should make you go wow, not disgust you

Swara Bhasker has not been an infant to the trolling scene over social media. The actress has been ever so opinionated about her social environment, be it political, criminal or just plain Bollywood drama. Her recent flick Veere Di Wedding has Bhasker projected as a free-thinking and expletives-spouting character- Sakshi Soni.

The film that debars the institution of marriage also stars Kareena Kapoor, Sonam K Ahuja and Shikha Talsania who are Swara’s girl squad. The film revolves on their individual take on marriage and its impact on their friendship and personal life.

Here comes the spoiler where Swara has been trolled aggressively since the film’s release. Apparently, in one of the scenes, Bhasker’s character is on the verge of divorce after Sakshi’s husband catches her masturbating. Although it has been applauded to be a bold move on the actress’ part but the audience being a conservative mass, the scene was not received very well.

It was a thread on Twitter that ignited the troll game. It, “Hey @ReallySwara just watched #VeerDiWedding with my grandmother. We got embarrassed when the masturabation scene came on screen. as we came out of the theatre my grandmother said “I’m Hindustan and I am ashamed of #VeerDiWedding.”

Replying to these tweets, Swara Bhasker hit back with her savage response stating, “Looks like a certain IT cell sponsored the tickets- or definitely the tweets!” Read the full article here

In a recent interview to Scroll, Swara shared her take on the receiving end of the masturbation scene. She stated, “The thing with all such scenes, whether it is an intimate love-making or a masturbation scene, is that you have to trust the makers. I read the script and I really just trusted the intentions of Rhea [Kapoor] and Shashanka [Ghosh] and the writers. The only thing I told Shashanka was, let’s keep it on the comic side because I knew that it was a shocking scene. I knew people are going to take some time to even understand how they should respond to it.”

She also mentioned that the idea of the scene was to wrap it with comedy and good humour. “I wanted it to be funny. Even if it is shocking, it should make you go wow, woah woah, but not disgust you. I told Shashanka that even if it meant that we play it a little over the top, we should play it like it is embarrassing for her as well. I didn’t want it to go into a porn kind of space at all, which is why we decided to put Sakshi’s own characteristics into the scene. She’s the kind of girl who tells her husband to wait while she finishes masturbating. She won’t be like, oh baby, you come now, let’s do this together,” she added.
