Monsoon hits, IMD issues red alert to parts of Goa

PANAJI: The southwest monsoon has finally advanced over half of Goa from Shirali, south of Karwar, as Canacona and adjoining areas experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday morning while the rest of Goa is expected to be fully covered by Friday.

With the onset of the monsoon in the next 24 hours across Goa, rainfall activity is expected to intensify and India meteorological department, Panaji, has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places on Friday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea, as the conditions are very rough.

The northern limit of monsoon (NLM) now passes through Mormugao, Gadag in Karnataka and adjoining areas, the India meteorological department (IMD) website stated. “South Goa has been covered on Thursday and by Friday the monsoon will advance over the rest of Goa,” M L Sahu, director, IMD, Panaji said.

As forecast, heavy rainfall activity was isolated and only Canacona witnessed a deluge of 73.6mm, while Dabolim recorded 24.8mm, Old Goa 14.6mm, Sanguem 12.7mm, Mormugao 12.2mm, Ponda 10.2mm and other centres on a lesser scale in the 24 hours leading to Thursday morning.

On Saturday and Sunday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in a few places, said the IMD.

The conditions are becoming favourable for the advance of the monsoon over parts of south Maharashtra, rest of Karnataka and Rayalaseema and some parts of Telengana, the IMD website states.
