DW BUREAU / Chandigarh

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday conveyed to Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari that the state government may curtail supply of water to Delhi after June 30, if the issue is not addressed soon.

Khattar said here that the state has already supplied 120 cusecs of water to the Capital, as a result the state may face water crisis soon.

He apprised Gadkari about various water-related issues Haryana had with other states and sought his help in solving them. In response to the Chief Minister, Gadkari assured him that the Centre would provide assistance to the Haryana government in finding a solution to the water dispute with other states.

Interacting with media after the meeting, Khattar said discussion was also held with the Union Minister on various issues with Rajasthan, and other issues related to SYL and BML Hansi-Butana Branch.

The Central government would take up the SYL issue and there is a possibility of finding a solution to the issue of BML Hansi-Butana.

He also urged the Centre to accelerate the pace of construction works of Renuka, Kisau and Lakhwar dams. With the construction of these dams, there will be more availability of water in Yamuna river.

The Chief Minister apprised Gadkari about the written communication sent to the Punjab Chief Minister regarding construction of dams to stop the water that is flowing to Pakistan.

Khattar also informed him about the shortage of water in southern areas of the state due to the construction of dams by Rajasthan on three rain-fed rivers – Krishna, Dohan and Sabi.

Delhi receives around 1,133 cusecs of water from Haryana. While two-thirds of this comes through the carrier-lined-channel, called Nunak canal, one third comes through a sub branch canal.
