Thane: 23 tonnes of ephedrine seized in 2016 to be disposed of this weekend

THANE: As many as 23 tonnes of ephedrine that had been seized in a drug seizure case involving former actress Mamta Kulkarni will be disposed at a government designated company at Narayangaon this weekend.

This could possibly be the biggest drug disposal in the recent past, source in police department claimed.

It was exactly a year back that the special NDPS court had given an order to dispose of the stock. After following a lengthy process, the police has completed the formalities.

"A drug disposal committee was constituted which is headed by a judge. Special inspector general of police shall supervise the disposal of 23 tonne of ephedrine as well as acetic anhydride that was also seized in the raid," a senior police official confirmed.

The officer added to undertake disposal of the seized narcotics drugs then identified the company in Narayangaon that has the setup to incinerated it.

The police said that presently a team of police from Thane city along with their counterparts in Solapur shall transport the stock to the Narayangaon from Solapur.

It was on April 14, 2016 that the crime branch seized over 20 tonnes of ephedrine and 2.5 ton of acetic anhydride, from a pharmaceutical factory—Avon Life Sciences in Solapur and other locations in Thane and Ahmedabad. Deeper investigations led the sleuths to the involvement of Vicky Goswami and Kenyan based international drug mafia Akasha brothers involved in the racket as well as former Bollywood actor Mamta Kulkarni.
