NEW DELHI: As DU’s
undergraduate admission portal closed on Thursday, the number of
registrations for the 56,000 seats saw a jump of 57,625 compared to last year. After Thursday midnight, the portal, which was launched on May 15, had 2,78,574 paid registrations.
However, the jump may be attributed, at least partially, to a change in the registration rule that allowed aspirants to fill up multiple forms. Also, applications for both merit- and entrance-based courses were accepted, for the first time, through the same portal this year.
DU allowed multiple forms after several aspirants said that they could not put in the correct details or “forgot to apply for the entrance-based courses while applying for merit-based ones”, a DU official said.
“Aspirants often make the simplest mistake. They fill up incorrect names, or mark the gender wrong,” the official said. Although DU never suggested that such aspirants fill up another form, many did so. While DU allowed applicants to cancel the “incorrect” form, it hadn’t made it mandatory, an official said. The university is yet to decide about the refund procedure in these cases.
The data revealed by DU shows it has got 3,558 applicants in the category of children/widows of armed forces. The university has updated the category this year by including two more segments — retired and serving defence personnel.
The first cutoff list will be out by June 19 and the entrance-based tests will take place between June 17 and 21.
