Hunt resumes for kayaker who went over waterfall in Queensland river

A kayaker who went over a waterfall in a remote river in far north Queensland late on Thursday is still missing.

A group of kayakers were travelling along the North Johnstone River, west of Innisfail, when one of them went over a waterfall and became trapped between rocks about 4pm.

The group activated a distress beacon, alerting emergency services that the kayaker, believed to be a man in his 30s, had become trapped.

A paramedic and rescue crew were dropped to the area on Thursday afternoon and spent the night with the group at the top of the waterfall, an ambulance spokesman said.

Police said a blanket of fog over the area and poor light hampered the search for the man on Thursday afternoon.

SES crews and a rescue helicopter were expected to join the search for the man on Friday.
