The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Wednesday arrested a 28-year resident of Bantwal for trying to to smuggle 699g of gold into Mangaluru International Airport.

The DRI have identified the accused as Umar Farook Kannadaguli, a resident of Mannila near Bantwal.

In a press release, DRI Deputy Director Vinayak Bhat said that following a tip-off the DRI sleuths had mounted surveillance at the airport and were on the look-out for Kannadaguli, who was arriving from Dubai.

Mr. Bhat said after Kannadaguli came out of the exit, DRI sleuths took him to customs arrival area for a thorough check of his baggage. The sleuths opened a multimedia system carried by him to find six gold bars concealed in the transformer of the system. The gold bars were of 24 karat purity.

Mr. Bhat said Kannadaguli was arrested for alleged violation of provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. They were on the look-out for the other accused associated with Kannadaguli, Mr. Bhat said in the release.
