Network Rail boss's CBE is a 'slap in the face' for commuters

The man who runs Britain's rail network has been awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List despite admitting his responsibility in a timetable overhaul that has caused misery for tens of thousands of commuters.

Mark Carne, 58, the chief executive of Network Rail, is receiving an honour for services to the rail industry, which has struggled to cope since the introduction of new timetables on routes in the north and south of England on May 20.

Other recipients of honours today include renowned historian and broadcaster Professor Mary Beard, who is made a dame, and the film star Keira Knightle, who receives an OBE.
