National Lottery ticket sales fell almost 9pc last year

The National Lottery has reversed an annual sales slump after admitting it had “lost relevance” in the lives of Britons.

Owner Camelot today announced ticket sales increased to almost £7bn in the year to March. This was after enduring what chief executive Nigel Railton labelled “one disappointing year”.

Sales had slumped 8.8pc in March 2017, shortly after the National Lottery fell off Britain’s television screens.

Mr Railton was recalled from abroad last November, where he was Camelot’s overseas chief executive, replacing Andy Duncan as boss. He was given a mandate to arrest the sales stall and launched a review intended to provide the foundations of a turnaround plan.
