Traffic went haywire with many arterial roads getting waterlogged as the city witnessed the heaviest spell of downpour since the onset of monsoon on Thursday. Around 10 houses were damaged in various parts of the district on the day.
Vehicular flow was affected in many places in the city with trees falling on roads. Officials of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services were on their toes, removing the uprooted trees, till the rain eased by afternoon. Traffic along the Karumom-Thiruvallam road came to a standstill for around two hours after a tree fell on the main road at Krishna Nagar.
Removing trees
Similar instances were also reported from Vayalikkada, near Vattiyurkavu, NCC Road in Vazhuthacaud and in front of the Kerala Water Authority office at PTP Nagar. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and workers of the Kerala State Electricity Board were deployed to remove the trees without disrupting electricity supply in the areas. Nevertheless, the police were required to divert traffic in these places.
Instances of waterlogging were witnessed in various places, including S.S. Kovil Road and low-lying areas near Pattom, officials said.
A precarious situation was averted when the compound wall of an eatery in Ambujavilasom Road on Pulimoodu collapsed on a shed in which gas cylinders were stored. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the place to remove the cylinders.
Houses destroyed
Two houses were reportedly destroyed at Vettucaud.
Seven houses in Andoorkonam, Karode, Nemom and Vettoor in Varkala were damaged. There were no casualties.
