Coles shoppers evacuate as floor collapses in West End shopping centre

A shopping centre in inner Brisbane has been evacuated after the floor began to collapse under shoppers on Friday.

Video posted on social media showed the tiled floor at the West End Coles shopping centre, on the corner of Norfolk Road and Boundary Street, buckling and collapsing as people tried to avoid the area.

Some shoppers called emergency services to report "loud banging" and tiles lifting.

One shopper warned others on social media that the building was evacuated as the tiles began buckling, creating "quite a sight".

The two-level shopping centre car park is directly under the supermarket.

A QFES spokesman confirmed four fire trucks were on the scene, with 16 firefighters assessing the situation after receiving calls just after midday.

People phoned emergency services reporting "loud banging" and tiles rising out of the floor, but no explosions were reported.

The spokesman said there were no details on injuries, but ambulances were on standby at the centre.

Firefighters were performing atmospheric checks to ensure no gas leaks had occurred and were working to isolate power and gas from the building as a precaution, he said.

Police were also on site assisting with the evacuation.

A structural engineer and builder were on site by 1pm working to establish why the building had moved.
