HYDERABAD:
Residents in Hyderabad may face a tough time this
rainy season as civic authorities are struggling with
monsoon preparedness with only 40% of nala desilting work being completed yet and restoration works pertaining to roads is only halfway through.
A staggering Rs 1,120 crore was allotted for complete facelift of city roads and deadline was set as June 10. But with IMD announcing advancement of monsoon, task seems difficult for GHMC. “We took up roads which were dug-up for laying water pipelines and restored it completely. Filling of potholes has been completed in many areas and in some places we are laying of BT layer, which is yet to be completed,” said Mohan Nayak, HRDC chief engineer.

Civic authorities should deploy teams and finish pending work soon, dug-up roads and poor restoration work will add to the misery of commuters. Contractors who failed to meet the deadline to desilt nalas should be penalised and blacklisted.
Another major part of monsoon preparedness is desilting of nalas, but only 40% of nalas have been covered yet. Many water-logging points are identified, but several points in peripheral areas have not been fixed.
After rain on Wednesday night, residents of Shirdi Nagar colony in Malkajgiri and low-lying areas in LB Nagar circle sent SOS messages to TOI. “There is hardly any time left for monsoon preparedness and the situation is much the same,” JLN Murty, president of a colony sent a message.
Meanwhile, the condition at Model House, government district hospitals in King Koti is better this year as authorities took up diversion of lines and have been able to reduce water stagnation in these places.
