Prince estate announces new album on singer's 60th birthday

The estate of and Records have announced a new album to commemorate the late singer's 60th birthday.

In a statement posted on its official page, the company said the new album '1983' will be released on September 21 on CD, vinyl and digital formats.

The album features working through nine tracks in a private rehearsal recording at his now-demolished home studio in the suburb of

"The private rehearsal recording, captured at Prince's home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, provides a rare, intimate glimpse into the iconic artist's creative process as he works through songs including '17 Days', 'Purple Rain', 'Strange Relationship', and 'International Lover'," it said.

The first song from the album, a cover of the spiritual "Mary Don't You Weep", will be featured during the end credits of Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" film, which releases in August this year.

The album's cover photo captures a rare view of backstage during the 1999 tour, which wrapped up in April 1983. It was taken by Prince's trusted and creative collaborator Allen Beaulieu, who worked closely with the between 1979-1984.
