Man dies in multi-vehicle crash in Lucas Heights
A man has died after a head-on crash in Lucas Heights, which has caused major traffic delays in Sydney's south at the start of the long weekend.
Emergency services, including six ambulance units, were called to the scene on New Illawarra Road around 4pm on Friday.
The male driver of one of the vehicles, heading southbound, suffered critical injuries and was reported to be in cardiac arrest before he died at the scene.
A woman sustained minor chest injuries in the crash and has been taken to St George Hospital, according to a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman. Another woman who sustained minor injuries has been taken to Sutherland Hospital.
New Illawarra Road was closed in both directions at Heathcote Road, and remained closed at 6:15pm. Motorists are advised the avoid the area.
A spokesman for NSW Transport Management Centre said there are also delays on diverted routes via Bangor Bypass, the Princes Highway and Heathcote Road.
