The Trinamool Congress leadership today expressed surprise over former president Pranab Mukherjee's decision to attend an RSS event and said he has done injustice to the political stature he had achieved in the last several decades.
"When the entire country is fighting against the divisive politics of RSS, Pranab Mukherjee's decision to attend RSS event has left us astonished," TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said.
"This is really unacceptable from a person like Pranab Mukherjee. We are really pained by his decision. I personally feel he has himself meted out injustice to the political stature he had achieved in last several decades," Chatterjee said.
Mukherjee's decision to attent the RSS event had triggered a major political slugfest with several Congress leaders criticising his decision.
The Congress today said images of the former president at the RSS headquarters had anguished millions of party workers and those who believe in pluralism and diversity of the Indian republic.
Congress senior spokesperson Anand Sharma took to Twitter to express his anguish after images of Mukherjee attending a function at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur appeared on television.
