SURAT: Health department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (
SMC) collected fine to the tune of Rs23 lakh from around 2,300 food stalls, restaurants and roadside eateries across the city during its 20-day campaign that ended recently.
Official sources said the food establishments were penalized for selling stale food and for unhygienic condition and uncleanliness. Many were also fined for operating without food licence from SMC. Over 5,000 establishments were checked and 2,300 were penalized.
The campaign started on May 16 and ended on June 6. About four teams of health officers were formed and given the task to check the food stalls, restaurants, roadside eateries and other establishments in the seven municipal zones of the city.
Medical officer of health, SMC, Dr Ashish Naik said, “Most of the shops and restaurants in the city are operating without licence. We have issued notices to such establishments.”
