Sustain injuries during drug smuggler’s bid to speed away

A probationary Indian Police Service officer and a constable allegedly sustained injuries after they were dragged by a vehicle being driven by a fleeing drug smuggler in Shahdara on Thursday morning, the police said.

IPS (Probationary) officer Harsh Indora was deployed as night checking officer in Shahdara along with constable Sunil Godara.

Mr. Indora spotted a car parked near Cross River Mall at Anand Vihar around 1 a.m. The police vehicle was stopped in front of the car to prevent the occupant from fleeing and the policemen got down for checking.

The accused, identified as 26-year-old Pranav Chauhan, was asked to step out of his car. As soon as he was asked to open the boot, he went and sat in the car saying he needed the keys to open it. Suspecting something fishy, the policemen asked Pranav to step out once again. However, he ignored them and put the car into reverse despite the driver’s door being open. Pranav ended up dragging Mr. Indora and Mr. Godara for a few metres, injuring them.

He was trying to flee, with the driver’s door still open, when the constable jumped inside his car. Mr. Indora and his driver Ashok Kumar started following the accused in the police vehicle.

Pranav’s car came to a halt when Mr. Godara snatched the steering wheel and ramming the car into a pavement. The accused was then overpowered by the policemen.

‘Repeat offender’

“Pranav is a resident of Surya Niketan in Anand Vihar. Around 100 gram of hash, syringes and blades seized from his possession. He is a repeat offender. Seven cases are registered against him at other police stations. His father is a businessman but the accused is addicted to drugs,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad.
