LUCKNOW:
Bahujan Samaj Party on Thursday re-inducted 200 Lucknow zone cadre workers who had defected to other political camps before the UP assembly elections. The development could be a shot in the arm of the party which has been witnessing repeated rebellion and subsequent defections.
Sources said a large segment of those whose "
ghar wapsi" took place on Thursday had moved with the party's former national general secretary Indrajit Saroj to the Samajwadi Party in September 2017.
Saroj, a four-time MLA and one of the founding members of BSP, had been expelled by
Mayawati in August 2017 in the run up to the assembly elections after he alleged that Mayawati took money for ticket distribution. Some others who returned to BSP's fold on Thursday, said party sources, had moved to BJP.
"A lot of people, especially from BJP, are in touch with us and there are likely to be similar 'ghar wapsi' functions in the coming days," said a party member, taking a potshot at BJP by using a term commonly deployed by the right wing when reconverting someone to Hinduism.
The party also carried out a reorganization of its Lucknow unit, replacing three of its nine Vidhan Sabha presidents. "The Lucknow north, central and Sarojininagar presidents were replaced as work in their area was found to be slightly slow. One of these was also unwell," said sources.
