Following the phishing of debit card details from an ATM near Singanallur and subsequent withdrawal of money from their accounts reported on Wednesday, some people, who had used an ATM on Lawley Road near R.S. Puram, have complained similar fraud.
At least five people complained to the Cyber Cell on Thursday that money from their bank accounts were withdrawn without their knowledge. All of them had used an ATM on Lawley Road, said sources. The police are yet to confirm the number of people affected and the total money defrauded.
On Wednesday, several people had complained to the police about large amounts withdrawn from their accounts by unknown persons in the early hours of Wednesday. This happened after the victims used an ATM on Kamarajar Road on Saturday.
According to the police, details of debit cards and their PIN numbers were collected by fraudsters through a skimmer and camera kept at the ATM.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) P. Perumal said that a video footage of the persons, who set up skimmer and camera in the ATM, has been collected from surveillance cameras at the ATM on Kamarajar Road. The Cyber Cell has started investigation based on the visuals.
A private bank, account holders of which had lost money following the phishing happened at the ATM on Kamarajar road, has blocked debit cards of several customers as a precautionary measure, said the police.
Though Cyber Cell had got visuals of persons involved in similar fraud earlier this year, nobody has been arrested.
