BHUBANESWAR: The housing and urban development (H&UD) department on Wednesday has asked the civic authorities of major cities and towns to make arrangements for treatment of domestic used water before it is discharged into the water bodies. The measure was taken after the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) expressed concern over the fall in water quality in 11 major rivers in the state.

"Water quality of the 11 rivers in the state is observed to be downgraded from its standard quality due to discharge of domestic used water without any treatment. You are therefore requested to take proactive steps for appropriate treatment of domestic used water prior to discharging of the same into nearby water bodies to improve overall water quality of the concerned rivers," read the H&UD department letter.

The OSPCB informed the H&UD department that water quality in Mahanadi, Baitarani, Brahmani, Rushikulya, Nagavali, Subarnarekha, Kolab, Budhabalanga, Vansadhara, Indravati and Bahuda has gone down.
