Vadodara: A woman working as a domestic help in Manjalpur was arrested on Wednesday for stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 1.9 lakh from her employer’s house sometime before May 25.
Mayuri Bhatt admitted to police that she had even take a loan of Rs 86,600 by pawning the stolen jewellery with a gold finance company in Tarsali.

Lopa Shah, a resident of Monalisa Apartments in Manjalpur, told police that she had locked her gold ornaments in her bedroom cupboard after attending some weddings in March. One day before she scheduled to leave for Thailand with her family on May 26, she checked the cupboard drawer where the ornaments were kept and found them missing.

Police said Shah didn’t complain then because she was about to leave for her vacation. As Shah suspected Bhatt of stealing the jewellery, she called her to work when the family returned on June 5. Bhatt made an excuse, saying she was not well and would come the next day. On Tuesday, when Bhatt turned up, Shah told her that jewellery had been stolen from the house. When Bhatt’s behaviour changed on hearing this, Shah took her to Manjalpur police station.

When the cops interrogated Bhatt, she admitted to having stolen the ornaments between May 10 and May 15, as she was in dire need of money. She also told police that she had pawned some of the ornaments.
