Three youth have been arrested from Dwarka by the Crime Branch in connection with an armed robbery in Panipat, the police said on Wednesday. They were arrested within 36 hours of robbery and the entire booty was recovered on Wednesday.
Wife held at gunpoint
The police said the accused barged into the house of businessman Naresh Kumar Gupta in Chandni Bagh in Panipat at 11 a.m. on Monday. The trio held his wife at gunpoint, and fled with cash and jewellery worth around ₹1 crore.
The men fled with nearly 500g of gold and 1.5 kg silver, along with cash and other valuables.
“Randeep Rathi, Sumit Rathi and Mohit Malik were caught when they came to sell the jewellery,” said Joint Commissioner Alok Kumar.
While Randeep is a second-year student of Bachelor of Physical Education in Nagpur, Sumit is a graduate from Sonipat and Mohit has graduated in physical education.
The Delhi Police kept the accused under surveillance after the Haryana Police suspected that the accused had fled to the Capital.
A team led by ACP Aditya Gautam was give the responsibility to track them. “The accused were carrying the valuables in a bag that was kept in their car. They have confessed to the crime,” said DCP (Crime) Bhisham Singh.
To revive business
The accused said they had started DBA Pvt Ltd in Kurukshetra and learnt about Mr. Gupta’s wealth from one of his acquaintances and one of their seniors. To revive their business, they planned the robbery and bought pistols to execute it.
The accused had started a multilevel marketing scheme in Panipat and lured investors promising high returns.
However they incurred heavy losses when their business did not pick up. After this, the three accused planned the robbery.
The police are on the lookout for the two persons who had tipped them off.
The arrested accused were handed over to the Haryana Police after interrogation.
