Mary Wilson, the widow of Harold Wilson, the Labour prime minister, has died at 102 after a stroke.

Lady Wilson of Rievaulx wrote poetry and opposed her husband over Britain's entry to the European Community.

She was married to the former prime minister for 55 years before his passing in 1995. The couple married on New Year's Day in 1940.

She was exceptionally loyal to her husband, but remained very much a private person.

She became a published poet and the couple had two sons - Robin who became a professor of mathematics and Giles who became a teacher.

Jeremy Corbyn led tributes to Lady Wilson, calling her a "wonderful poet" who had provided huge support to her husband's general electoral victories in the 1960s and 70s.

Mr Corbyn wrote on Twitter: "Sad to hear of the death of Mary Wilson. A wonderful poet and a huge support in Harold's General Election victories. I send my condolences to her family and friends."

Former Labour minister David Hanson also paid tribute to her and praised her support of the party.
