MC forms teams to remove illegal ads in public places
CHANDIGARH: Municipal commissioner Kamal Kishor Yadav, on Wednesday, formed an anti-defacement squad to ensure that illegal advertisements displayed at public places like electricity poles, walls in market areas and outer parts of buildings in the city are removed.

The squad, comprising enforcement inspectors and sub-inspectors removed banners and posters displayed in the Sector 26 grain market, bus stop walls, electricity poles and walls of toilet blocks, among others on Wednesday.

The municipal commissioner said the MC would examine the validity of notices, banners, boards, posters and graffiti in the city and remove unauthorized publicity material. “The anti-defacement squad has been empowered to remove banners, posters and other publicity material illegally put up by institutes, firms and individuals. Expenses incurred for removing such banners and posters will be levied on violators”, Yadav said.

Currently, illegal posters, advertisements, banners and papers can be seen throughout the city, particularly in commercial areas. A number of posters can also be seen in and around educational institutes. They generally feature pictures of successful students.

Sources in the MC said since advertisements are to be put up at specific areas with permission, such banners and advertisements are a violation of the Advertisement Act in the city. “Each squad will have three to four members, who will visit specific areas in the city and remove illegal posters and banners. The teams will visit the areas constantly and will be monitored senior MC officers. Regular meetings will also be held in the days to come to monitor progress”, said an MC official.
