Perizada screwed down for June Stakes
John Nisbet and training partner Ron Weston have their eyes on the Ramornie Handicap to close the career of Perizada but she’s going that well they might pick up a June Stakes on the way at Randwick on Saturday.
The six-year-old mare is already twice group 3-placed, including being a runner-up in the Sheraco Stakes splitting Ravi and Daysee Doom, despite carrying a screw in a knee and having a foot that bruises easily and has proved problematic throughout her career.
She has still managed nine wins and eight placings from 24 starts and most of her unplaced runs come with stories of woe.
“Ronnie does a great job keeping her sound and I ride her work because she can be a bit of a handful,” Nisbet said. “We just work as a team with her because she is the best horse we have had. She has the screw in her knee, so you just have to be careful not to overtax her but she is very well at the moment.
“We started this campaign looking at the Ramornie as her swansong, but she came through that first-up run in great order, and this race presented itself at the right time.
“When she is right, there aren’t many horses that can go with her and she has proven that in good company before.
''It would be great to get that black type win for her because it would help with her value as a broodmare.”
Perizada also has a great record under Matthew Cahill, who has four wins from seven rides on her, the latest her luckless return when trapped wide on her way to fourth at Randwick fortnight ago.
“Not much went right for Matthew and her in that race but she was still coming at the end,” Nisbet said. “The times Matthew has got beaten on her there are reasons.
“He rode her at Wagga [during the 2015 carnival] when we thought she was right after knee surgery but she obviously wasn’t and the other time he got beat she had no luck.”
Perizada will have to overcome a wide gate of 14, but shares the second line of betting with Glenall at $6 for the June Stakes with I Thought So once again favourite at $3.40.
“We are just hoping she can get across into a handy position because she has improved with that under her belt and I think this looks a good race for her,” Nisbet said.
